 ** CURRENT NEWS **

NAMI Marin’s  JANUARY 2012 Newsletter “Marin’s Voice on Mental Illness and Recovery” is here!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

NAMI Marin has partnered with Buckelew Programs and the County of Marin to create a new brochure:  911 Crisis Call Guidelines – “Mental Health Crisis Call, Marin County”  One of the hardest things a family may have to do is call the police when their loved one is behaving in an unsafe manner. These guidelines may help you in this moment of crisis. Helpline staff are also available Monday-Friday between 1-3 pm.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today in America:
  • One in four adults—about 57.7 million Americans—experience a mental health disorder in a given year.
  • Despite effective treatments, there are long delays between the first onset of symptoms and when people seek and receive treatment.
  • Fewer than one-third of adults and one-half of children with a diagnosable mental illness receive mental health services in a given year.
  • In the United States, the annual economic cost of mental illness is estimated to be $79 billion. Approximately $63 billion reflects the loss of productivity as a result of illnesses.
However, there is hope…
With proper care and treatment, 70 to 90 percent of persons with mental illnesses experience a significant reduction of symptoms and an improved quality of life.
What can you do?
During this spooky season, remember the nation’s mental health care crisis is the real monster. When you give to NAMI, you ensure we can continue to make a difference for those living with mental illness.
NAMI Marin recommends New York Times article by Benedict Carey: Expert on Mental Illness Reveals Her Own Fight.
This is an article about how the Family to Family Program for families and caregivers makes a difference: “Support Program Can Help Caregivers Cope with Relative’s Mental Illness”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

NAMI Marin is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families living with mental illness, through advocacy, education and  support.

We help… we listen…we understand (we’ve been there)…
we help families cope… we support…
we advocate changes to laws and services for the mentally ill.
We are people like you.
